Back to the Blog after a few weeks’ hiatus, due to major projects on the go … and then, the pandemic! In the face of these very challenging times for everyone, just humbly wish to share some thoughts about how, as artists, we may help loved ones and the bigger community, by taking care of our creative spirit.
1-Acknowledging how we feel. Unfocused, unmotivated, unnerved by the whole crisis? Talking to someone dear or writing it down in a journal is a way to reduce the stress – it did help me in the past few days. We must be compassionate to ourselves first to be present for others.
2-Finding respite. In the face of massive changes to our way of life, I suggest to reduce exposure to constant news (once a day is plenty). Then look for inspirational interviews, documentaries or films that are art related – like Louisiana Channel, Tate, or MOMA, to name a few on YouTube, or the beautiful series Abstract on Netflix. I’m catching up on my readings in the evening as well. These two strategies give me a necessary mental break before tackling whatever tasks are expected of me nowadays.
3. Building new rhythm – Routine seems to be key. Getting up at a specific time, dressing for the day (even if it’s just to be in dirty ‘studio’ clothes), sitting down for meals, and most important, go to bed to insure a better sleep (still working on that last bit). This way, our brain is better equipped to face the challenges of the day.
4- Showing up in the studio – or any creative space you have at your disposal at home. Even if it is just to clean surfaces or organize your supplies. I find comfort in seeing the works in progress, the sketchbooks full of promises. Just taking time to contemplate my surrounding helps to recharge the batteries.
5- Sharing the creative spirit – Technology is a powerful tool to brake our collective isolation. Artists from around the world have started creating videos with up-lifting or educative materials. I am keeping up my IG feed and actively discussing with local peers to stay connected and share knowledge or creativity with the bigger community. Find your way to reach out.
